Statement on Vessels

Maintaining bodily balance has become a fixation as my bilateral hip dysplasia has grown more acute, and my recent painting series “Vessels” reflects this challenge. Increasing awareness of this ailment has shifted my perceptual focus on the bilateral structure of the painting. I am seeking a dependable balance within the asymmetrical relationship.

My mark-making is initiated over multiple trilateral shapes on the grid, as if I were on a pair of crutches, balancing my weight in search of stability. Each rectangle is a steadfast frame that tries to house the imperfect body, allowing the segmented triangular shapes to circulate as pivotal points of energy.

Outside my studio, I am often a spectator and a passive participant in endless flickering images on a digital screen. My eyes are infiltrated with intense short-wavelength blue light. Therefore, facing a painting on paper in the studio, I suddenly crave the paint’s color, opacity, weight, and a sense of reciprocity. On the grid linear mesh, I laboriously map my marks, and they remind me of my hand movement and their touch on the surface.

The diminutive paint marks can tirelessly repeat as they signify countless cells and fibers that make up my body. Each painting is a vessel that carries a sense of weight, gravity, and balance, which reflects my complex sensory experience.
